Reiki is an intentional access point to Universal Life Force Energy.
Many of us have been misled or confused about what Reiki actually is. Reiki is a Japanese term that translates to “Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy” or “Universal Life Force Energy.” It isn’t a single technique or a one‑size‑fits‑all method. The way Reiki is expressed: the modalities, the intuitive approaches, the way the energy is guided, is unique to each practitioner.
Reiki is formed from two Japanese words:
REI
Often translated as:
- universal
- universal life
- higher knowledge
- higher power
- spiritual (Christ) consciousness
- Creative Source
- God Source energy
In essence, REI refers to the higher intelligence or creative force you personally recognize as your Creator or Source.
KI
Translated as:
- energy
- life force
You may recognize similar concepts in other traditions: Qi, Chi, Prana, aura, spirit, life, light, Ki.
Foundational Definitions & Why Definitions Matter
The following words are defined directly from Merriam‑Webster, Oxford, and Cambridge dictionaries. I include them because clear, shared language helps us understand the nature of what we are defining, without confusion or mysticism that obscures rather than illuminates.
In quotations, I offer my own perspective on how these meanings translate into the practice and functionality of Reiki.
ENERGY
Dictionary meaning:
Energy refers to power that is expended or capable of being transformed into work: the ability to act, move, or create change.
Key qualities Energy includes:
- Dynamic quality – a sense of movement or momentum (narrative energy).
- Capacity for action – the ability to be active or to activate something (intellectual energy).
- Usable power – the potential to produce an effect.
- Positive force – a guiding or supportive influence.
“In Reiki, I interpret energy as the intelligent, responsive life force that can be directed with intention to support healing, clarity, and balance.”
SPIRITUAL
Dictionary meaning:
Relating to, consisting of, or affecting the human spirit, as opposed to material or physical things.
It refers to thoughts, beliefs, inner awareness, and the non‑physical aspects of being.
“In Reiki, spiritual does not mean religious. It refers to the subtle, inner dimension of a person, their consciousness, their emotional landscape, their connection to meaning and Source.”
UNIVERSE / UNIVERSAL
Dictionary meaning:
Universal refers to something that is applicable to all, existing everywhere, or shared across all people or things.
The universe is the totality of existence in all space, time, matter, and energy.
“Universal, in the context of Reiki, speaks to the idea that this life force is not owned, created, or controlled by any one person. It is available to all beings, everywhere.”
GUIDE
Dictionary meaning:
To guide means to direct, show the way, or help someone move through something difficult or unfamiliar.
“In Reiki, the guide refers to the way the energy itself, along with the practitioner’s intuition & directs the flow. It is not forced. It is a collaborative movement between Source, practitioner, and recipient.”
Bringing It All Together
When we understand these words; energy, spiritual, universal, and guided, we begin to understand what Reiki truly is, which is an intentional relationship with the Universal Life Force Energy that animates all living things.
Reiki is not a belief system, nor is it a technique that belongs to one culture, one lineage, or one type of practitioner. It is a way of working with the natural life force that already exists within and around us. The practitioner does not “create” the energy or “give” their own energy. Instead, they act as a channel, a guide and allow this universal force to flow where it is needed most.
Reiki is collaborative, intelligent and responsive to intention, openness, and the innate wisdom of the body and spirit.
And perhaps most importantly, Reiki is accessible to everyone.
It does not require you to subscribe to a particular belief, religion, or worldview. It simply invites you into a deeper awareness of your own life force and the universal energy that supports all healing, growth, and transformation.
Understanding these definitions helps us move beyond misconceptions, providing clarity & perspective. It gives us language that is grounded, respectful, and aligned with both tradition and modern understanding.
From here, we can begin to explore how Reiki is practiced, how it supports well‑being, and how each practitioner brings their own lived experience, training, and intuitive gifts into the work.
As you continue exploring the practice in Reiki, I invite you to stay curious, open, and connected to your own inner experience. Let these definitions be a foundation that builds a way to innerstand Reiki with clarity, that leaves you feeling inspired.
If you feel called to learn more about how Reiki can support you, or how a practitioner’s training and lived experience shape the way this energy is guided, I’ve written a companion post that goes deeper into how I personally serve through my education, ethics, and multidimensional practice.
